Valentine’s Day is observed on 14th
February and celebrated in many countries around the world. It is the day when
cupid will strike the hearts of many, and make them fall in love. St. Valentine
’s Day began as a liturgical celebration of early Christian saint named
Valentinus. He was a martyr who was imprisoned for performing weddings for
soldiers who were forbidden to marry. From that day it has become a practice of
celebrating this day.
Though it is a day to celebrate love, there are many
groups in the society who are against this day. They call this day as
“perverted day” as they do not believe in the theme of love. These things were
mainly practiced by the rural areas that were very patriarchal and did not
believe in proclaiming their love for their beloved. This trend continues still
today some of the sections of the society oppose this day.
There are cases happening in past about couples
being beaten up on Valentine’s Day when they were found with together. Our
society is so narrow-minded that they do not even think that Valentine’s Day is
not only a day for couples but even for family members, friends and loved ones.
This mindset of people should change so that this day is celebrated widely and
not only by couples but even by the rest of the people.
