India’s inaugural beach soccer
tournament, Barefoot 2013, started at the Calangute Beach, Goa last week. The
opening ceremony of the five-day sporting event witnessed the presence of important
personalities like Francis D’Souza, Deputy Chief Minister, Udit Sheth Minister
for Tourism Government of Goa, Chairman, Goa Football Development Council;
Prabhudesai, Sports Director, Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, to name a
few.
The matches saw 32 teams participate from the 64 registered football clubs competing for the championship title on day one of the tournament. The sporting event brought together a mix of beach soccer and entertainment to the fullest.
The event attracted a large number of spectators. TransStadia hosted the beach soccer matches at the T-Box Mobile Arena set-up. This was the first time that such a facility had been installed in India for a beach soccer tournament. The event also served as a major tourist attraction, and many foreigners were seen enjoying the game and cheering the local teams. Such steps taken by the government will help promote tourism and sports in the state, thereby benefiting the people of Goa.
