With lack of employment opportunities in the state, youngsters
in Goa are looking at moving oversees in search of livelihood and a better
standard of living. Some of the most preferred places for jobs now-a-days are
USA, Europe and jobs aboard cruise liners. Many young men work on the service
sector of the ships and not the administrative section. They find employment in
the kitchens, since a great demand prevails for cooks, servers, waiters,
bellboys, etc. Young Goans also complete training courses and diplomas in Seamanship
Catering and House Keeping before venturing on the ship. Loads of Goans are employed
on different ships all over the world.
Goans do not like to migrate to other cities in
India because they’re unsafe and probably that’s the reason why men look for
careers in shipping. While Goan men find careers at sea an easy way for making
money, women look at careers as air hostesses on international airlines like
Emirates, Qatar, Lufthansa, Kingfisher, Jet Airways, and others, which is again
a career that allows women to travel the whole world and provides housing in
the home country like Doha and Dubai.
Though the trends in seeking employment overseas has
changed over the years, Goan youth still keep their eyes open for any avenue
that will take them away from their land and provide them better income and so
a better quality of life. Though many return to their home and family, others prefer
settling abroad.
